Birding Questions & Answers

Question: What bird that winters in Southwest Florida migrates the furthest to breed?

Answer: Sanderlings. They nest in upper Siberia.

One Sanderling that wintered in Peru was banded with a unique color band combination that made it possible to track the bird. For three years, this Sanderling was recorded going up the west coast of North America in the spring.

Although it is known that Sanderlings breed in upper Siberia, during those three years no one was there to record.

But each fall, this same Sanderling was observed traveling south along the eastern coast of North America through Cape Cod, North Carolina, Texas and returning to Peru for the winter. In Texas, it appeared within the same two week period for those three consecutive years to feed along the same 100 meters of beach.
