Birding Questions & Answers

Question: What native North American bird is the most prolific breeder?

Answer: The Mourning Dove.

A pair of Mourning Doves may raise up to six different broods each year, although two to three broods are more common.

During nest building, the female stays at the nest site and the male collects sticks. He stands on her back to give her the nest material, which she takes and weaves into the nest. Mourning Doves nest in the forks of a horizontal tree branches, on the ground, in deserted nests of other species, or anywhere else that provides solid support, including empty baskets and flower pots.

Two eggs are typically laid; nests with three or four are usually the result of more than one female laying in the nest.

The eggs hatch in 13-14 days, and the young fledge in another 12-14 days -- one month total from start to finish. Both male and female chicks are sexually mature in 85 days.

Mourning Doves are the most abundant dove in North America, and they are the most widely hunted and harvested game bird.
