Birding Questions & Answers

Question: Which (if any) birds other than owls regurgitate indigestible parts of prey, or food, called pellets?

Answer: Species from most of the families have been documented casting pellets (also called castings) consisting of food that they are not able to digest.

For instance, terns cast the bone, scales and fins of fish; Sanderlings cast the crushed shell of small clams; and gulls cast baloney wrappers picked up at land fills.
