Birding Questions & Answers

Question: Do any non-exotic birds in Collier County have actual green in their feathers (not just the iridescent sheen as in Glossy Ibis)?

Answer: Yes. Green is not a common color in many feathers, but at least 10 species of birds that have been recorded in the area have some green in their feathers.

These include Green Heron, Wood Duck, Mallard, American Wigeon, Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal, Purple Gallinule, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Rufus Hummingbird, and Painted Bunting (the female bunting is the only all green bird, with several shades of green). Does anyone know of any others with real green, not sheen?
