Birding Questions & Answers

Question: What is the primary food of Scrub Jays?

Answer: Although these jays eat many things (insects, reptiles, amphibians, etc.), in season acorns of many different scrub oaks are the major item on the menu.

Interestingly, Scrub Jays often bury storable food such as seeds. One study showed that they eat one species of acorn immediately but leave other kinds of acorns buried in the ground for months. When the acorns were tested for acid content, the longest stored nuts originally had the most acid, but after being buried for months, the acid leached out. And people don't think birds are smart!
